Insight Vacations - Yellowstone National Park Day 2

Our 4th day on the Insight Vacations tour, was spent exploring Yellowstone National Park and its many wonders.  The first stop was at Fountain Paint Pot - so called because of the boiling mud pools of many colours.  Then on to Mammoth Hot Springs, Canyon Village, Fishing Bridge, and Yellowstone Lake.

Mammoth Hot Springs

At Mammoth Hot Springs, spectacular, colourful terraces are created by travertine.

Canyon Village

We stopped at an overlook and then took the trail to see the famous Lower Falls and Upper Falls, the subject of many famous paintings:

Yellowstone Lake
Yellowstone Lake occupies the southeast quarter of the caldera and the lake is North America's largest mountain lake, which had drained into the Pacific Ocean and Arctic Ocean (via Hudson Bay).  It now drains into the Atlantic Ocean via the Gulf of Mexico.  It is 20 miles long, 14 miles wide and 430 feet deep at the deepest point.

We saw a grizzly bar and its cub foraging for food.  The cub was playful and kept climbing up on its mother's back, and sliding down.  We watched by the side of the lake for some time.  When you see wildlife in the park, you are required to phone a park ranger to come; so he arrived and kept his eye on things, making sure we did not get too close.  Someone else had phoned prior to our bus passing by on this road.

And those were the highlights of this wonderful day.
