Enjoying Nine & Dine Golf

Four of us girls play golf on Tuesdays at Musqueam Golf & Learning Academy in its "Nine & Dine" league.  That means nine holes of golf starting in late afternoon and then dinner in the clubhouse afterwards.  I am not a great golf player but so much enjoy the fresh air, greenery, the views of the Fraser River and the friendship.  We all encourage each other with our golf game, which is needed as we are not great players.

Here are some photos from Tuesday which was hot but with a good breeze off the ocean/river:

Remembering Dad Today

I seem very drawn to my Dad today, on this Father's Day.  Thoughts of him are flooding my memory.  Such a hard working man, always taking courses to better himself and advance in his work.  Loved to plan special family vacations and special holiday meals. Loved his children so much and was very proud of us.

Here are a few old, old pictures:

About 1940 - age 18

Again, about 1940

October 1942, Mom and Dad had been going together for six months at this point

He died much too young at the age of 56 while on vacation in New Zealand.

Chris Passes Exams

My nephew, Chris, has passed his exams and has been certified as a Licensed Insolvency Trustee. He has been working with his Dad for over two years at Ken Rowan & Associates Inc. and qualified for his license within two years which is fabulous! Way to go Chris, Neil and I are so proud of you!

A Licensed Insolvency Trustee is the new name for the former "Trustee in Bankruptcy" and the designation is "LIT".  LIT's are licensed by the Federal Superintendent of Bankruptcy under the Federal Bankruptcy & Insolvency Act.

Ken is very proud of him and is placing this advertisement in a local community newspaper:

Traffic Diverting Through Neighbourhoods

Since the May 3 closure of SW Marine Drive from Granville Street to Camosun Street, vehicular traffic diverting through the Vancouver neighbourhoods has increased enormously. As I sit at my computer typing this, our previously quiet West 39th Avenue is an endless stream of cars and trucks racing to get through, sometimes going through stop signs, honking their horns in annoyance and forming long lines at West Boulevard to try and turn left or right.  The noise is continuous from 5:30 am to about 10:30 pm.

When we first moved here about two years ago, you would see a car every few minutes and it was a quiet pleasant neighbourhood. What a change! And this is in addition to the huge garbage, recycling and organic waste trucks that are going through the streets and lanes - three for each apartment building each week, and of course each building has collection on a different day making these trucks a constant daily force on each street.

When walking in Kerrisdale Village along West 41st and East and West Boulevards to shop in our local neighbourhood stores, the insane noise from huge cement trucks, double length dump trucks, tractor trucks, double length articulated buses all of which have been diverted along 41st Avenue is absolutely overwhelming. Those merchants who leave their front doors open have told me the noise is endless all day long. I have occasionally seen truck drivers make rude signs at whoever is watching when they are inconvenienced by red lights for pedestrians or by other cars who happen to be in an intersection when the truck driver wants to get through. White walking along West 41st from West Boulevard to Yew Street (one block) which takes about 5 minutes, I counted 5 buses and 8 huge trucks.

Of course vehicles are trying to get where they are going fast and when they see long lines on main streets, they divert onto the side streets.  I understand this, but I hope they realize what effect this has on neighbourhoods. I am feeling pessimistic that this will ever change.  After work on SW Marine drive finishes, there will always be other street closures for major construction impacting our lives.

I can only imagine how dreadful it must be in the Marpole area where getting through 70th & Granville Streets is reportedly a nightmare. And Burrard Street and the Bridge!  I won't go anywhere near it. Given that new rapid transit routes are years away from being operational, is there any solution to this chaos? It is making life miserable for many people. Summer of construction hell!

50th Anniversary - Scrapbooking and Wall Displays

In preparation for the Golden Anniversary Tea on June 5, my role was to bring our History Books up to date from 2011 to the present, and also to prepare wall displays featuring summaries of our historical achievements in the areas of:

1. Leadership
2. Food (catering)
3. Social Action & Community Service
4. Religious Programming
5. FUNraising
6. Our connection to Women of Reform Judaism and the WRJ Pacific District
7. Our contributions to the Temple building.

It took me over one month to update the History Books.  I took the original two books, split them into three, and then created 2 1/2 more books.  The Scrapbook Warehouse at Marine Drive and Oak Streets was very helpful and I ordered my supplies there. The biggest challenge was sorting all the material that had been saved for five years which I did on the dining room table.  Figuring out what to keep, putting it in date order, and matching miscellaneous photos to events was very time consuming. Once that was done, I was able to start assembling pages and using double sided tape to insert everything.  It was well worth the effort but I am glad it is finished and that I have my dining room table back.

All of these displays were very well received at the Tea and will be used again at our Closing Event.

50th Anniversary Tea

Today was the Golden Anniversary Tea for my Sisterhood. We celebrated 50 years since we were chartered by the Women of Reform Judaism.   I invited long time friends and family to join me.  This was an English style tea with fancy sandwiches, scones with cream and strawberries, plus sweets and fruit. Here are some photos:

UBC Graduation - May 31, 2016

I attended a special UBC Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, May 31.  It was special because my nephew (Ken 's youngest son) earned his Batchelor of Applied Science in Engineering Physics (Mechanical) finishing the program in five years.  Lots of hard work and stress for him, but now it is done.  The family is so very proud of him.  Here are a few pictures of this special day for Teddy and us:

Interim President, Martha Piper, announced the winner of the Governor General's Silver Medal.  The winner was an Engineering Physics student, as was Teddy.  Ms. Piper advised that the Engineering Physics course was the toughest course at UBC.  Teddy is really brilliant!
